These videos were created to accompany the Open Up Integrated Math 1 curriculum. The structure of an Open Up lesson is unique; after the new lesson, there is a Retrieval that reviews concepts from previous math classes or previous units/lessons. This is designed to prepare students for the practice problems in the Ready, Set, Go section that follows.
In my first year teaching Integrated Math 1, I found these Retrievals to be cumbersome. For some students, the Retrieval was just the right amount of review so they were ready to tackle the RSG. For a large majority, however, the Retrieval was either unnecessary or not enough.
Enter the flipped classroom!
This year I have assigned the Retrievals as short homework videos, never longer than 6 or 7 minutes. This has done wonders for student learning! Students can go through the Retrievals at their own pace and rewatch as needed. I also get to spend more class time helping kids with the RSG problems one-on-one.
That's my favorite part of flipping ... I get more time to help kids with math!
The system is not perfect. As with any flipped classroom, there are students who don't watch the videos and are pretty consistently behind. But I'm not sure that it's any worse than in the old system. And the nice thing about having the videos available is that they can always go back and get caught up.
If you haven't tried flipped classrooms before, this is a great way to try it out!
